Stewart's tribute to charity service

Stewart Exton relied on Nenna Kind Bus Service to take him to Sheffield’s Weston Park Hospital, from his home in Matlock in Derbyshire, 41 times throughout his treatment.

The former police seargeant was diagnosed with prostate cancer in 2013 and, in addition to the stress of his diagnosis, was faced with the added worry of getting to and from the hospital.

Stewart, aged 68, said: “Many people across our region are unaware that if ever they are diagnosed with cancer, they would need to travel to Weston Park Hospital to receive the specialist treatment they require. It would have been very difficult for me to attend my appointments in a timely and cost effective way if not for the Nenna Kind bus service.

“Cancer is hard enough to come to terms with, but I was ever so grateful that getting to and from my appointments was one less worry on my mind throughout treatment.

“The staff at Weston Park Hospital do an absolutely brilliant job and although I’m now thankfully in recovery, I do miss my daily trips with fellow patients over to Sheffield!”

And now Stewart has decided to help others in the same position, volunteering his services weekly at the Nenna Kind Centre, in Chesterfield, which provides a place for cancer patients, their families and friends to call in and have a chat to volunteer, as well as accessing a range of therapies.

Stewart added: “I am in total awe of Barbara and David, who run Nenna Kind, for all the hard work they’ve put in to making such a worthy and recognised service for local cancer patients.”
