Steel town middle class

Have your say

IT was once a bastion of the working class – with tens of thousands of its population sweating it out in the steelworks and pits.

But now it seems Rotherham residents are trying to shake off the image – with most describing themselves as middle class in a survey.

Market research firm Britain Thinks surveyed 2,000 adults in focus groups in Rotherham and Basildon to find out current attitudes to class – 75 per cent of whom said they were middle class. Just 24 per cent of those surveyed described themselves as working class.
