Steel, ships and Wood

Have your say

PHOTOGRAPHER Tom Wood is putting together an exhibition which explores the industrial relationship between Sheffield and Birkenhead – and he needs your help.

The exhibition features the Cammell Laird shipyard in Birkenhead which was born out of a merger between Sheffield’s Johnson Cammell & Co and Birkenhead company Laird Son & Co in 1903.

The relationship between Birkenhead and Sheffield continued up until the shipyards closure, with Sheffield-based English Steel providing steel used to build the ships.

Tom said: “The exhibition aims to include the personal stories and memorabilia from the people who worked on the ships at this time.

“I feel this area of ship production is of particular interest.”
