Steel giant ‘puzzled’ by rumours of closure plan

Have your say

Claims that Tata Steels had told the government it was considering closing research facilities, including its Swinden Technology Centre in Rotherham, are being dismissed in the industry.

Tata wouldn’t say anything about the claim, carried by a national newspaper, beyond stating it never commented on ‘rumour and speculation’.

Both Tata and the Government are puzzled about the rumour, particularly as the Indian steel giant has been investing in its research facilities and new initiatives like the Automotive Proving Factory being built at Tata’s Brinsworth Strip Mill in Rotherham.

Funding and resources from both the Government and Tata are going into the Brinsworth project, which is likely to increase demand for the expertise at the Swinden Technology Centre.
