Have your say

I recognise that face.

Our Women of Steel are all over Sheffield thanks to the latest advertising campaign for The Star Walk 2013.

The poster girls are all in their 90s but are enjoying their time in the limelight as they lead fundraising for the Women of Steel Statue Appeal.

Today the women, who kept our steelworks producing vital weapons during the wars, are backing a final push to get people signed up for next week’s fundraiser.

And they reminded everyone that if they can do it at their age, everyone can.

The Star Walk will get under way at 11am on Sunday, April 28, and there is still time to sign up via our hotline on 0114 252 1299.

The posters urging everyone to join in have popped up across the city.

They have been sponsored by Sheffield law firm Rosalind Watchorn Solicitors and several members of the firm will be taking part on the day.

This year’s event is a one-mile lap of Hillsborough Park so some of the Women of Steel can join in no matter what their age.

Several walkers have said they will be participating in fancy dress and lots of children will be having fun on their way around the course.

The walk starts and finishes at Hillsborough Sports Arena, and Activity Sheffield will be leading a warm-up from 9.30am.

The Arena is also hosting a nostalgic display looking back at The Star Walk, Women of Steel and the Hillsborough area, which is being organised by Hillsborough and Owlerton Local History Group.

There will also be a chance to see a scale model of the statue which is to stand in Barker’s Pool.

All ages are welcome. Entry is £10 adults and £5 children. Visit to find out more.
