STAR SUPERKIDS: Roisin’s talent shines through

She has been appointed a Young Ambassador for Music for Sheffield and helps to teach music workshops throughout the city, making it her mission to improve access to music for children from all walks of life.

The Sheffield High School pupil has also performed at a number of local events, including Tramlines and Art in the Gardens at Sheffield’s Botanical Gardens and has taken part in a musical masterclass with singer Paul Pashley.

Roisin is currently studying for her GCSEs - hoping to go on to work in either music or medicine - and still makes a point to find time to help children from disadvantaged backgrounds with their school homework on evenings and weekends.

Last year, the 15-year-old, of Norfolk Park, even gave her Christmas gift money to a local boxing club that could not afford to have its central heating repaired, so that it could continue to be an important social outlet for children in the area.

For all these achievements, and in recognition of her extraordinary generosity and talent, Roisin took home two awards on the evening, for Inspirational Young Person, sponsored by Magna, and the Music & Performing Arts Award, presented to her by Sheffield’s Razzamataz Theatre School.

Mum Rosie, who attended the awards evening along with Roisin and Roisin’s uncle, said: “We absolutely loved the evening. It was very touching and moving and Roisin was so honoured to have been recognised among all those other incredible children – we’re both just very grateful.

“I’ve always been blown away by Roisin and the things that she does and the wonderful person she’s growing into.

“It was two years ago that she heard that boxing club had had their boiler stolen and she’d just got a few bob for Christmas, so she said she wanted to give them the money to help them get a new boiler installed so they could continue their classes – that’s the kind of girl she is, always thinking about other people and what she might be able to do to help.

“She launched a homework club at Pitsmoor Adventure Playground after she started chatting to the children there for whom English isn’t their first language, and decided she wanted to help.

“She said to me ‘I’m lucky to be getting a good education, but there are kids out there that don’t have access to that, so I think I should share what I know.’

“She’s also really big into music - singing, violin, piano, church organ. She’s been musical since she was four-years-old and is very talented.”
