Bethany Halliwell’s family don’t know what they would have done without her over the last 12 months.

Since her brother’s diagnosis with autism at the beginning of the year, Bethany’s warmth and positive spirit has helped to keep the whole family going as they navigate a difficult time.

Right from the beginning, the 18-year-old took the time to learn all about her brother’s condition, so she could help with his care, and took on babysitting duties whenever needed to allow her parents some time to themselves.

Bethany’s mum Sarah said: “The past year has been difficult, but throughout this time, we can’t thank Bethany enough for everything she has done to support us and her brother and to allow her dad and I some precious moments together.”

Bethany now volunteers with a local young carers’ club, where she has helped them to secure funding to continue their work in the city.

She also challenged Ed Milliband in the new Care Act in an open question session recently and, after graduating from Notre Dame High School this summer, she has gone on to secure a place at the University of Sheffield to study International Law, which she will be taking up next September.

Taylor & Emmet Solicitors were proud to present her with The Family Award in recognition of her commitment to her loved ones.

Mum Sarah added: “I nominated Bethany because I really just wanted people to see what an extraordinary young woman she is.

“We thought it was lovely when she was shortlisted and were absolutely delighted when she won.

“Everybody thinks their child is super, but it means so much to have other people recognise that they are special, so it was an immensely proud moment for us.”
