Recently, the 13-year-old has been supporting his mum through her difficult battle with cancer.

As a young carer, he has been supported by his school, Firth Park Academy in Shiregreen, attending the young carers’ group and also the Sheffield Young Carers’ Project, a local charity dedicated to supporting young carers in the city.

Despite his commitments at home, George’s attendance at school has always been over 95 per cent and he currently has over 50 achievement points to his name.

Principal Dean Jones, who nominated Geor ge for the award and presented him with it, said: “George is an absolute star; a cheerful boy who always paticipates fully in school life.

“He also has SEN support for speech/language difficulty and memory intervention. So despite supporting his mum at home, and dealing with all the worries he has about her health, he continues to try his very best at school each and every day.

“I was so impressed with him when he spoke on the night, after receiving his award. The presenter asked him how he cares for his mum and he told everybody in the room that his job was to keep her calm and positive and to make sure that every day was as good for her as possible.

“What an incredible kid – an absolute inspiration.”
