Their move outside has been criticised by readers, with many arguing the statues have been left “wasted” and out of sight.

Pamela Gormley said: “Needs putting back to its original position. Wasted in the car park outside.”

Sandra Clarke added: “Disrespectful to put our steel heritage statue in the car park. Needs to be put back to its original place inside.”

Readers also highlighted the statues’ role as a meeting point.

Hannah Crawford said: “Everyone knew… if you was ever lost or just meeting friends - ‘Meet at the statues!’

“Now where do they go in the chaos?”

Suzanne Collett who worked in Meadowhall as a student remembers the statues being a common meeting place too.

She said: “Would customers losing family and friends please meet them by the bronze statues on Market Street… Hearing this every 15 minutes. It’s ingrained in my memory.”

Ken Barton said: “It belongs back where it was originally positioned,” adding he was “surprised it’s still outside and not been thieved for scrap.”

Kate Trehern said: “It needs to go back to it’s original position so everyone sees it, not outside.”

Naomi Burton summarised: “Just not the same since they moved that statue outside.”
