A DAD accused of trying to kill a friend who intervened in a row with the mother of his children told a jury he ‘lashed out’ at his victim in self-defence, adding: “I feared for my life.”

Josiah Foster, aged 18, of Burngreave Road, Burngreave, denies attempting to murder Darren Helliwell, 24, by knifing him in his chest, thigh and back in an alleyway off Somerville Terrace in Walkley.

Sheffield Crown Court heard Darren stepped in when Foster argued with Jade Wardle, mum to his two young children – with Foster telling his alleged victim he was ‘going to get bang-banged’ before returning with accomplices.

But Foster told jurors he was alone when he carried out the stabbing in February, and said Darren had chased him with the knife.

He said he visited Jade at her mother’s house on Somerville Terrace to ask her about arrangements for the children, as he planned to travel to London the next day.

Foster said: “Darren immediately arrived, he was very aggressive towards me. He was saying, ‘Who do you think you are?’ I asked him ‘Could you stay out of this?’”Foster said he then ran down a nearby alleyway because he felt afraid. “It was quite dark – I stumbled and fell,” he said, adding Darren caught him up.

“Darren was trying to get something from the waistband of his trousers, he was having difficulty and dropped it. I grabbed it and realised it was a knife. I lashed out to stop him from beating me, I don’t know how many times. I believe if I hadn’t acted in self-defence I wouldn’t be here today.”

Foster said he fled when Darren turned away, clutching his side.

But Fiona Swain, prosecuting, claimed: “You intended to kill him. He swore at you and you weren’t having it.”

Foster was convicted of possessing a lock knife in July last year, jurors heard. He denies attempted murder, wounding with intent to cause GBH and possessing an offensive weapon. The trial continues.

n In a report of these proceedings in The Star on Tuesday, we reported that Craig Sutton and Darren Helliwell chased after Josiah Foster. In fact it was stated in court that Kyle Wardle, not Craig, chased after Foster with Darren. We apologise for the error.
