A KILLER who stabbed a man nine times and slashed him across the face is set to be sentenced at Sheffield Crown Court today after admitting manslaughter while being tried on a charge of murder.

Gary McKeown, aged 37, knifed 36-year-old Philip Smith at his house on Church Street, Thurnscoe, in January.

He denied murder, but admitted stabbing Philip in self-defence.

The prosecution said the killing was sparked by a row over a girl between Philip’s younger brother, Ben, and McKeown’s nephew, Gary McKeown Jr.

But the jury later heard the incident could have been drug-related.

Shaun Smith QC, defending, said Philip and Ben went to McKeown’s house to ‘sort him out’.
