Squash evening raises £5,000

World champion squash stars, Nick Matthew and Laura Massaro, visited to city to lead two teams of big names from the world of TV and sport in a memorable night of charitable competition and fundraising at Sheffield’s Abbeydale Squash Club.

The pait were joined on the night by BBC presenter Dan Walker, Sheffield Sharks basketball star Mike Tuck, Team GB Olympic diver Freddie Woodward, boxer Paul ‘Silky’ Jones and Malaysian Squash No1 Nafiizwan Adnan.

Matthew’s Team Theo triumphed over Massaro’s Team Steel City at the event in aid of the children’s hospital.

A spokesman for the event said: “Boxer Jones took on diver Woodward - neither of whom had ever picked up a racket before - and Massaro gave TV presenter Walker a squash lesson, despite being challenged to use a thirty-year old wooden racket.”

Walker later Tweeted: ‘Brilliant night playing squash...got absolutely mullered by Laura Massaro. I think she needs a bigger handicap...a cricket bat? ;-)”

Three-time world champion Matthew - who along with Walker is a patron of The Children’s Hospital Charity - organised the event, along with Steel City Marketing and revealed he was delighted with how the night of fundraising went.

He said: “I’m so happy. The inaugural Steel City Cup has been a remarkable success and hopefully we’ll make it an annual event.

“There have been two winners - Team Theo and the Sheffield Children’s Hospital. I’ll be very happy to give Laura a chance at getting her revenge on us next year!”
