The St Mary’s and St Edmund’s Fundraising Support Group has been organising community events for 28 years to raise funds for The Children’s Society, a charity which supports some of the most vulnerable young people across England.

Money they have raised supports projects such as the LEAP programme in Leeds, which enables disadvantaged children and young people to reach their full potential. The LEAP runs activities such as support for disabled young people to build relationships and try new sport and leisure activities.

The Support Group gathered at St Mary the Virgin Church in Sprotbrough on Palm Sunday, 20 March, to celebrate their achievement and receive personal thanks and recognition from Matthew Reed, The Children’s Society’s Chief Executive.

Mr Reed was “delighted” to mark the group’s achievement, and said: “We are incredibly fortunate at The Children’s Society to have such dedicated supporters, and this group should be very proud of all they have achieved over the years. Many children have been helped on their behalf, and we all say a heartfelt thank you.”

Victor Hext, chairman of the support group was grateful for Matthew’s visit and felt “thrilled” to mark such an achievement. He said: “It has been a great group to Chair, and we have such fun putting on events to help so many children. We’re thrilled with Matthew’s kind presentation. We just want to aim for £200,000 now.”

The group will continue their fundraising efforts with a Scarecrow trail through Sprotbrough in August.
