Howarth, who has made the switch to Owlerton from Workington, made the GB squad last season but missed the cut to race in the tournament.

Now the Mancunian is hoping to get the nod to ride in the final at Belle Vue on July 30 after they were seeded straight through as hosts. Howarth said: “With the World Cup in my home city, it would be awesome to try and get into the team this year. I don’t want to think about that too much, I just want to have a good start to the season and perform well for my clubs but it will be in the back of my mind.

“I’ve got two good clubs, Wolves and Sheffield, so I’m in a position to have a good season and be in the mix. With the first match being at Belle Vue I’m desperate to get off to a good start and put my name out there.

“Hopefully I can raise a few eyebrows with a good performance there and hit the ground running.

“I’m only young, but the chance to ride in the World Cup Final in Manchester would be incredible.

“There are lots of good riders who will be aiming for the same thing, but it’s up to me to perform on the track and make Rosco (Alun Rossiter) notice me.”

Howarth added: “The main thing is to score plenty of points for my two clubs and do my job, and if I’m doing that then you never know what can happen.”
