Speedway Report: Sheffield Tigers 53 Workington Comets 38

SHEFFIELD quickly bounced back to top form to climb up to second in the Premier League table with a 53-38 win over Workington at Owlerton.

The tenacious Tigers saw their four-meeting run brought to an end with a disappointing 55-37 away defeat at Workington on Saturday.

However, they responded in perfect fashion with a convincing triumph over the Comets in the return fixture last night to make it five successive wins on home shale.

It was a powerful performance from the Yorkshiremen as they accounted for 12 race winners and were in control throughout.

They were led impeccably by Jason Garrity, who stormed to a faultless 14+1 point paid maximum with a dominant display. He started his evening in spectacular fashion, performing a stunning swoop around the outside of Michael Palm Toft to win heat four and put his side six ahead.

When he took to the track for his third ride, the visitors were in tactical ride territory yet he blitzed clear of former Tigers’ man Ricky Wells to nullify his attempts to kick-start a Workington comeback.

The Comets hit back to give the Tigers a brief scare with a 5-1 in heat 12, but the untroubled Garrity and scintillating skipper Simon Stead held their nerve to deliver timely 5-1s in heats 13 and 15 to see them over the line.

Stead once again led by example, suffering just one defeat and helping them get off to a perfect start with victory in heat one.

Kyle Howarth also recorded three straight wins to ensure they kept his former club within an arm’s length in the middle part of the meeting.

He was partnered by Dimitri Berge in heat nine for the Tigers’ first 5-1 as the flying Frenchman made a smooth transition into the No.4 spot.

Despite the absence of Josh Bates due to his shoulder injury, reserve duo Arthur Sissis and Nathan Greaves made vital contributions to help cover his absence.
