A special birthday for brave Sheffield schoolboy Kasabian
Dozens turned out to show their fundraising spirit to support a brave Sheffield boy battling cancer on his eight birthday.
Kasabian Newton-Smith had a birthday bash to remember as pupils and staff at Yewlands Academy organised a charity gig to help pay for a special treehouse.
But it was the number of birthday cards that Kasabian received from Sheffield folk that made the day so very special.
The eight-year-old had asked for people to send him birthday cards and his mum Kay couldn’t believe the number they received.

She said: “I was so overwhelmed. He received over 1,000 cards. It was so nice – he loved it.
“I’d like to say thank you to everyone at Yewlands Academy for making this happen and all the other people who sent in cards. You’ve made his day.”
The brave schoolboy wasn’t going to miss his big day and was determined to make it after spending time in hospital.
Musician Challen Carmichael dedicated a song to Kasabian before leading a chorus of ‘Happy Birthday’.
Kasabian’s family was told when he was just two-years-old that he had a fortnight to live.
Yewlands education welfare officer Michelle Dwaine paid tribute to her pupils.
“I’m so proud of them. They’ve put heart and soul into this. The card appeal snowballed and everyone was keen to help out.
“We’ve raised £825 for Kas’s Smiles and we have more plans to carry on fundraising.”
