Spanish fiesta to be held in Sheffield

A one day fiesta is to be held in Sheffield's Winter Garden to celebrate the Spanish speaking community of the city's Catholic Cathedral.

The ‘¡Hola Sheffield!’ event is to take place on Saturday, May 14 and will be the first ever festival celebrating the Spanish-speaking community of St Marie’s.

It will celebrate the cultures of countries including Spain, Mexico, Colombia, Puerto Rico and Ecuador.

Laura Claveria, Heritage Engagement and Learning Officer at St Marie’s Cathedral, said: “This is a first both for St Marie’s Cathedral and Sheffield – a free one-day festival showcasing the unique crafts, dance and music of the Spanish-speaking countries.

“St Marie’s is made up of a wonderfully diverse and multi-cultural community. Parishioners come from all continents and speak around seventy languages. We wanted to celebrate this diversity and decided to organise a festival focusing on the Spanish-speaking community, one of the strongest and, culturally speaking, richest groups.”

There will be a temporary exhibition at the Winter Garden on May 14, which will be on display in St Marie’s until the end of the summer.
