South Yorkshire troops head to Afghan conflict

MEMBERS of an Army battalion which recruits heavily from South Yorkshire are saying goodbye to their families before flying out to Afghanistan over the coming days.

Soldiers from Third Battalion The Yorkshire Regiment will spend the next six months in Helmand Province.

Other troops from South Yorkshire being deployed during the same period include members of Third Battalion The Rifles and the Light Dragoons cavalry regiment.

Final training was completed last month with an exercise on Salisbury Plain before the soldiers were able to spend time with their families.
