Veterans from across South Yorkshire are being given a helping hand back into the world of regular work.

Remploy, which provides specialist employment services, has stepped up efforts to help former servicemen and women who have had to leave the Armed Forces back into employment.

About 30 people – many of whom suffer from mental trauma or physical disability as a result of their time in the military – have been given support from the Sheffield branch of Remploy, on Campo Lane in the city centre, since July.

Businesses in Sheffield and Doncaster have also signed up to community covenants, pledging special recognition of veterans.

Chris Marshall, regional champion for Remploy’s veterans, said: “There have been lots of success stories. Servicemen and women have a lot of skills which are transferable, particularly in jobs involving security and driving.

“A lot suffer with post- traumatic stress. They’ll have been in the army since they were young and don’t know any different.

“We’ve got an NHS outreach worker and help with benefits. It’s not just about getting people jobs, it’s about getting them to a point where they are able to work.”
