A police officer was knocked unconscious in an attack in Rotherham.

The officer was assaulted in Farquar Road, Maltby, on Tuesday.

He regained consciousness and was taken to hospital but did not suffer any serious injuries.

A 22-year-old man was arrested on suspicion of assault and a 24-year-old man on suspicion of assisting an offender.

A South Yorkshire Police spokeswoman said: "A man is reported to have assaulted an on-duty police officer, rendering him unconscious, in Farquhar Road, Maltby, Rotherham.

"The officer regained consciousness and was taken to hospital. He is not believed to have suffered any serious injuries.

"We would like to thank local residents for their help last night and for their continued support."
