South Yorkshire MP’s protest against beer tax hike

CALLS for a freeze in beer tax are being supported by South Yorkshire MP John Healey.

Mr Healey, Labour MP for Wentworth and Dearne, added his message to a hand-crafted oak barrel which has been presented to the Treasury by the British Beer and Pub Association, Campaign for Real Ale and Society of Independent Brewers.

Mr Healey said annual tax hikes are ‘doing great damage to our pubs and brewers’.

The tax rises are a result of the beer duty escalator, which was introduced by the last Government in 2008 and is currently in place until 2014/15. It means that beer duty is automatically increased by 2 per cent above inflation every single year.
