South Yorkshire motorists reminded to use seatbelts

Motorists in South Yorkshire are being urged to use their seatbelts - on the 50th anniversary of the Government making it law for all vehicles to have them installed.

The South Yorkshire Safer Roads Partnership is using the anniversary as a reminder that belts save lives.

Joanne Wehrle, the Partnership’s safer roads education manager, said: “Not wearing a seat belt is one of the main causes of death or injury, along with speeding, using mobile phones whilst driving and drinking and driving.

“In a crash you are twice as likely to die if you don’t wear a seatbelt.

“Fortunately, many people have got the message and over the past decade the number of people wearing seatbelts has consistently been above the 90 per cent mark. But this means that a further 10 per cent do not wear their belts – putting themselves and others at risk of serious injury.”
