The Government has set aside more than £1.3 billion for road improvements as part of the Autumn Statement.

Mr Grayling said: "This is a government that steps up, not back which is why we are investing record amounts into improving our roads across the country.

"This investment is over and above the £23 billion we are spending to get motorists to their destinations quickly, more easily and safely.

“The schemes announced today are focused on relieving congestion and providing important upgrades to ensure our roads are fit for the future - removing the barriers to help make an economy that works for everyone.”

A total of £1.4 million will be spent looking into improving the route between Sheffield and Rotherham - including reducing congestion around junctions 33 and 34 of the M1 - in order to 'maximise the potential for growth' of the Advanced Manufacturing District,

Up to £1.573 million will be invested in the Supertram network. The South Yorkshire Passenger Transport Executive has been asking the public what improvements they would like to see.

It was revealed last week that the £58 million plan for a tram-train link between Sheffield and Rotherham had been delayed. Work was due to start in 2015.

The Government is also making £925 million available for councils to bid for to upgrade and repair their roads.A further £70 million from the Pothole Fund will be allocated next year - but Sheffield Council will not get any of that money as it already has a long-term highways contract with Amey.
