South Yorkshire firefighters praise Good Samaritan who saved man's life

Firefighters have praised a Good Samaritan who spotted and helped a man who had fallen into a canal.

A South Yorkshire Fire Service crew from Thorne was called out at about 2.45am, today, Saturday, February 15, after a report of man who had been seen in the canal, at Thorne, near the Bridge Keeper’s Lodge, at Doncaster.

A Thorne station crew spokesman said: “A young lad saved this bloke’s life because he had seen him bobbing in the water and kept hold of him while alerting neighbours who called the incident in.”

A Thorne station crew was called-out with a water rescue appliance but this appliance was not needed after firefighters rescued the 47-year-old man from the canal.

The station spokesman added: “We pulled him from the water and he had been there a while and appeared to be suffering from hypothermia.”

An ambulance took the casualty to Doncaster Royal Infirmary for treatment.
