A planned strike over proposals to make firefighters work until they are 60 is ‘ completely unnecessary’, a minister has said.n

Fire minister Penny Mordaunt said she was ‘disappointed’ by the Fire Brigades Union’s decision to walk out across the country, includingin South Yorkshire. The strike starts on Friday October 31 and runs until November 4.

She added: “During industrial action public safety will remain our primary focus and we have tried and tested contingency plans in place.

“If they need help, people should dial 999 and they will get a response.”
