The partner of a tragic dad who died after punching a car window says her children have lost their father ‘just because of a moment of madness’.

Dad-of-three Carl Thorpe, aged 27, was walking home from a night out when he struck the punch. He died of blood loss after gashing his arm so badly he severed an artery.

Carl’s partner Shelly Sockett, mum to his three children Leighton, seven, Freya, five, and three-year-old Jaxon, was called by police with the news, but Carl died before she could reach the hospital.

Today Shelly, 34, said: “My initial reaction was anger with Carl. I’ve lost my partner and the children have lost their dad just because of a moment of madness. It’s very difficult to come to terms with.”

She added: “Leighton keeps asking me why he did it - and I don’t have an answer.”

Carl, from Askern, Doncaster, died at 4am on July 20. Shelly said: “The way everyone in the village has reacted has been overwhelming.

“It just goes to show how loved he was.”
