South Yorkshire dad to cycle 160 miles for Children's Hospital Charity

Baby Alfie Mimms, of Rotherham, who was just nine-days-old when he was diagnosed with meningitis, septicaemia and Group B streptococca. He received treatement at Sheffield Children's Hospital and made a full recovery.

Bradleigh Mimms, aged 30, and his brother, 27-year- old Josh Mimms, will be setting off from Seascale in Cumbria and finishing in Whitby in the hopes of raising hundreds of pounds for The Children’s Hospital Charity.

Bradleigh and his wife, Kiera Mimms, both of Rawmarsh in Rotherham, first suspected something was wrong when baby Alfie developed a high temperature and started struggling to breathe.

At just nine days old, Alfie was taken to Sheffield Children’s Hospital for emergency treatment. He responded well and after a few days he began to breathe on his own again.

Kiera said: “There aren’t any words to describe how I felt when Alfie woke up. It was just such an amazing relief.

“We hadn’t been able to touch him before then because of all the wires – it was so good to finally be able to cuddle him.

Meningitis can cause long term damage, including hearing loss, loss of limbs and visual impairment. But thankfully Alfie has made a full recovery and is a happy baby who loves playing with his four-year-old sister, Ava.
