SOUTH Yorkshire councils are receiving £4.2 million in payments from the Government for creating new homes and bringing empty properties back into use.

Payments are based on how many homes have been created in each area, with Sheffield receiving £1.2m, Barnsley almost £1.4m, Rotherham £1.2m and Doncaster £385,000.

Funding paid out under the scheme is used by councils towards further developments.

In Sheffield, 285 new homes were created in the 12 months to October and 609 brought back into use.
