South Yorkshire child abuse survivor: 'Page 3 pictures degrade women and should be banned'

Sammy, 32, who was abused by gang-leader Arshid Hussain in Rotherham as a teenager, said she appeared in some of the papers herself as a teenage glamour model.

She said: "From my experience and with the support of a lot of other women, I believe they should be prohibited, as it's degrading towards women.

"It is important that we send the right messages to the next generation and currently we are not."

Sammy, who bravely gave evidence that led to Hussain and his brothers Bashart and Bannaras being jailed in 2016, has written to business minister Andrew Griffiths, calling for a meeting about the way women are portrayed in some publications.

She said: "Newspapers such as the Daily Star, Daily Sport, The Sun, are showing indecent images of exposed women.

“Currently, these papers are available and advertising these images on newsstands in shops all over the UK.

“I find it greatly concerning that images of naked women, posing sexually, are so readily available for a child of any age to see.

“As a previous ex-glamour model, I myself have featured in some of those newspapers when I was just 18 years old.

“I feel I understand, more than most, how a young person can turn to work such as glamour modelling in their most vulnerable times and how they can be exploited in these situations.”

She finished the letter by saying: "We need to ensure that we offer our children a better country to grow up in."

Hussain was jailed for 35 years in February 2016 after being found guilty of grooming, raping and sexually assaulting 15 teenage girls, including Sammy.

His brothers Basharat, and Bannaras, 36, were jailed for 25 and 19 years. Their uncle, Qurban Ali, 53, was jailed for 10 years.
