Solve this enigma

I wonder if you or your readers can help me solve an enigma:

My son and I have been running local self-defence classes for over ten years now.

Though initially quite successful, we have seen class numbers rapidly decline over the past few years, (this is a not just us but a nationwide trend I hasten to add).

As an example, we recently put a lot of time and effort into advertising a completely free session, yet received absolute zero response, (I tell a lie, one woman was interested but couldn’t be bothered to travel a full mile to the venue).

I am not an avid reader of the Star however whenever I look through it there seems to be an article on virtually every other page about muggings, rapes and attacks in general.

Even murders are becoming more commonplace in what was once a safe city, yet people have little or no interest in learning to protect themselves! Why?

It is not the money: We offer very cheap, and often free, classes.

It is not time: people still flood the gyms, slimming and keep-fit classes.

It is not lack of interest: whenever we tell people what we do the response is often, “Ooh I’d love to do that….but Eastenders is on tonight”, or other such inane excuses. So what is it?

I wonder if you could put the question out there and see if we can solve this mystery. I would be greatly indebted to you if you could.
