Welcome to the neighbourhood...
Army reservists have been sampling the local produce after moving into their new home next to Sheffield’s world-famous Henderson’s Relish factory.
Members of the Yorkshire Regiment’s Fourth Battalion were previously based at Endcliffe Hall but are now housed at Somme Barracks, West Street.
The base, shared with Sheffield University’s Officer Training Corps, is next door to Henderson’s, on Gell Street.
The 4 Yorks Territorial Army unit is now seeking new members.
Colour Sergeant Stuart Coles said: “It’s a period of time when we are expanding and although we are an infantry unit, there are also opportunities for clerks, drivers and signallers.
“There are currently around two dozen soldiers in our Sheffield platoon.”
Col Coles said there are opportunities to take part in activities in Britain and overseas, and some members of the platoon have been deployed on recent tours of duty in Afghanistan.
There had been fears Sheffield was to lose its TA infantry unit in a reorganisation of the reserve forces - which would have meant the end of an era because there has been one based in the city since Victorian times.
The Territorial Army is being given an increasing role nationally as defence cuts shrink the size of Britain’s full time Army to 80,000 soldiers.
