Soldier sets sail for world championships

A SOLDIER from Doncaster is hoping it will be plain sailing when he represents Great Britain at the Catamaran World Championships in Greece, which started today.

Lance Corporal Simon Horsfield, serving with the 5th Battalion The Rifles, in Germany is one of two soldiers from 20th Armoured Brigade competing at the TopCat K1 World Championships at Kyllni, on the Peloponnesian peninsula, today.

The 30-year-old helmsman expects to finish in the top third of the elite field despite being in the first British team to enter the World Championships.

The former Hatfield High School pupil believes his experience as an Army sailing instructor could make the difference.

He said: “We have a lot of upper body strength by teaching windsurfing and sailing on a daily basis.”

The father-of-two was a sailing instructor at Hatfield Water Park.
