PLAYERS from a Doncaster area football team have scored success after netting a cash win in a contest fronted by ex-England star Gareth Southgate.

Balby CSV FC has secured seventh place in a nationwide competition organised by phones retailer Phones 4u – netting a £2,000 cash boost in the process.

The team secured the final place in Phones 4u’s nationwide Upgrade Your Team campaign which supports local and non-professional football teams.

Balby CSV, who play in Division 4 of the Doncaster and District Sunday League, won the backing of their local community to place joint 10th place in the competition league table after securing 722 votes on Facebook, making them the last of 11 teams in the country to win a £2,000 cash injection.

James Wilde, player and club treasurer, said: “Everyone involved in the team is ecstatic!
“There were lots of ups and downs as the competition drew to a close and we’re so pleased to have won the funding.

“We knew the contest was going to be competitive and as the deadline drew nearer things got a little too close for comfort!.

“Some of the other teams in the contest have described our battle with the team we finished joint 10th with as like watching the epic Federer vs Nadal Wimbledon final.

“Both teams were overtaking each other every second as the deadline drew closer. Luckily, as we had the exact same number of votes when the competition closed, Phones 4u awarded us both with the £2,000 cash prize.”

He added: “We are most likely to buy a full training kit for all players and some basic training needs like cones, hurdles and bibs.
“And we’ll definitely need to buy some more balls – we only had one at training the other night.”

Former England star Gareth Southgate, who has been backing the campaign, said: “I’m delighted that Balby has won £2,000 of funding. They received huge and well-deserved support from their community which is a credit to all the players’ commitment to the future of the club.”
