Smoke alarm alerted family

A FAMILY were alerted to a blaze raging in front of their South Yorkshire home - by smoke detectors fitted just hours earlier by firefighters.

As flames licked against their house in Goldthorpe at 12.20am today, the two newly-fitted smoke alarms shrieked into life and alerted the occupants.

They called 999, but were reluctant to leave the premises in Railway View without their pet dogs, so they waited for firefighters to arrive.

The fire started when mattresses and other rubbish was torched in the front garden.
