‘Smelly’ materials must be removed from Doncaster

BOSSES at a recycling firm must remove hundreds of thousands of tonnes of ‘smelly’ waste by-product from a greenbelt site.

Sterecycle, based at Templeborough, Rotherham, treats ‘black bag’ rubbish from domestic dustbins across the Yorkshire region, removing products such as glass and metals, which are sold for recycling.

Organic elements are treated using steam and pressure to produce what it calls Sterefibre, marketed as a ‘soil improver’.

But the company has struggled to find markets for the material, which is stockpiled at a landfill site in Hampole near Doncaster.

Sterecycle, and contractor Catplant which operates the storage site, appealed a Doncaster Council decision to take action over smells from the material after residents complained.

The planning inspectorate has ordered it to stop using the site completely, deeming the land use ‘inappropriate’.
