MOTORWAY speeds could be slashed through Sheffield to cut air pollution.
Plans to open the hard shoulder of the M1 as a fourth lane at busy times mean variable speed limits and cameras are being introduced on the motorway.
When hard shoulder running takes place at busy times, which are also the most polluting, the 70mph speed limit will be lowered to cut congestion.
Sheffield Council is now arguing for a cut to 50mph at all times along the stretch of road close to areas such as Tinsley.
Coun Jack Scott said the decision would be ‘unpopular’ ,but would have a massive impact in improving air quality.
Transport Secretary Justine Greening said she would consider the idea.
