Youngsters headed to Mexborough library on Tuesday afternoon to see one of their favourite literary characters come to life when Bryony Clarke became Rapunzel for the day.

A group of around 15 little ones dressed up as princesses and pirates for the summer reading event, during which Bryony delighted the children with readings of a collection of stories including fairytales.

Helen Foster of the libararies’ service literacy team said the event had been a big success.

She said: “All the kids really enjoyed it.

“It’s great to have someone young like Bryony, who’s only 18, promoting reading like that.

“We’ve done similar events all across Doncaster and they’ve gone really well. We’ve had as many as 35 turn out for some of the events which is really encouraging.

“It’s part of the Summer Reading Challenge, which this year is based around Roald Dahl and 100 years of his books. There’s still time to complete the Summer Reading Challenge which finishes on September 12.”

The next Princesses and Pirates library event will take place at Denaby Community Library on Friday between 10.30am and 11.30am.
