'Skinny' prosecco new to Sheffield has fewer calories than a banana

Sugar is the new fat and health-conscious foodies are seeking all kinds of ways to cut their sugar intake.

Lovers of bubbly can now enjoy a glass of prosecco that contains less than half the amount of sugar in the usual product.

Zizzi in Leopold Square in the city centre has added Skinny Prosecco to its menu.

Alcohol normally has a high amount of sugar added during production and prosecco-makers in particular often use gelatin and other dairy products in the filtering process.

But Thomson & Scott's Skinny Prosecco is organic, vegan, low in sugar and has only 67 calories per 100ml- fewer than a banana.

CEO and founder Amanda Thomson, who was raised on a vegetarian, no-sugar diet, said: "When you have top quality grapes, a talented winemaker and great conditions, why add unnecessary sugar to the process?"

She added that the Prosecco will soon be stocked by all Zizzi restaurants so Sheffielders can expect the Zizzi in Meadowhall to be offering up the healthy beverage too.

A glass of the healthy tipple in Zizzi is £5.95 and a bottle is £29.95.
