Six sex offenders ‘missing’ in Derbyshire

The whereabouts of six registered sex offenders are currently unknown to Derbyshire police.

The figure was revealed in a Freedom of Information request, which showed there were almost 400 ‘missing’ sex offenders nationally.

Registered sex offenders are required to inform the authorities of their addresses so they can be monitored.

Derbyshire Constabulary said five of the missing registered sex offenders are abroad and one is believed to be dead.

Assistant Chief Constable Martyn Bates said: “Derbyshire Constabulary works hard to minimise the risks and threats to public protection.

“Latest figures show that there are 1,072 registered sex offenders in the community in Derby and Derbyshire and 280 in custody.

“Six offenders are in breach of the law by not registering their whereabouts and are wanted by the police.

“Five of the missing registered sex offenders are abroad and one is believed to be dead.

“When registered sex offenders are missing or wanted in the UK, all police forces are alerted.

“If they return to the UK, there are several processes in place to ensure that they are brought to the attention of police and arrested where appropriate.

“The UK has some of the most effective tools in the world to manage registered sex offenders,” he added.
