FILM and theatre star Sir Patrick Stewart will be guest of honour at a graduation day in Barnsley today.

The Yorkshireman, famous for roles in Star Trek and The X Men, will preside over University Campus Barnsley’s biggest ceremony.

The number of students graduating successfully after studying at the campus – part of The University of Huddersfield – means it is necessary to host three separate ceremonies at The Civic for the first time.

Barnsley-born legend and former cricket umpire Dickie Bird, and fashion guru Rita Britton, who both have honorary doctorates from the university, will also be present.

One of the ceremonies will feature a procession of 85 graduates in their robes and academic headgear, walking from the University Campus to The Civic.

Sir Patrick, who is chancellor of the University Campus Barnsley, will hand out awards to a total of 221 students at the ceremonies, the first of which begins at 9.30am. The ceremonial procession will take place prior to the middle of the three ceremonies.
