Silt dredged from South Yorkshire lagoon to protect against floods
The Centenary Riverside Local Nature Reserve at Templeborough, near Rotherham, acts as a floodplain for the River Don and has helped to protect the surrounding area from flooding on 15 occasions since 2009.
However a build up of silt in the lagoon has reduced its capacity to hold water so reserve bosses, the Sheffield and Rotherham Wildlife Trust, are to remove a layer so the site can continue to be used as a floodplain.
The Trust secured £15,543 from Mondegreen Environmental Body Ltd and Rotherham Council to hire Dinsdale Moorland Specialists Ltd to remove deposited silt using excavators.
