Nuhiu bagged his fifth goal in his last three matches as Wednesday secured a third consecutive Championship victory.

The 28-year-old also played an instrumental part in the opener at the Stadium of the Light, neatly heading down Barry Bannan’s cross into the path of Lucas Joao, who lashed a shot past Lee Camp.

Boss Luhukay said: “I hope that Atdhe stays a long time at Wednesday. He makes us happy with his goals and how he is playing. We know he’s an important player for us.”

“Nuhiu was fantastic,” Luhukay added. “The knock-down for Lucas was good too. It was great to get the result. I am three months here, everyone can see progression from Lucas and Atdhe. They are winning balls for us too. That is the character from the team too.

“I have been positive about him and Lucas also. It makes me positive when I see them every day. They always have a good attitude. They know they have the trust and respect from us.”

Now Luhukay has challenged Wednesday to maintain their fine form heading into the final six fixtures of the campaign.

“We have said that we need to finish the season as best as we can,” he said. “We are in a good way, and we need to keep fighting if we want to finish the season in a positive way.

“We have some hard games coming up but some good momentum.”

“I am proud of my team that they have made good progress. We are working hard for each other,” he added.

“It was not an easy game. We had to work hard for 90 minutes. We have strikers who don’t need a lot of chances, but we were very effective.”

Wednesday were forced into a defensive reshuffle in the first half when Morgan Fox sustained a hamstring injury.

Luhukay has confirmed Fox and Sam Hutchinson (ankle), Gary Hooper (hip) will miss the rest of the season.

Luhukay has not ruled out Daniel Pudil (hamstring) from featuring in Saturday’s clash with promotion-chasing Fulham.

The Czech was rested as a precaution versus second-from-bottom Sunderland.

“In the last two days, he has not been 100 per cent,” he said. “When a player is not 100 per cent, we must not let them play and that’s why we gave Daniel a rest. Maybe he can play against Fulham.”
