Shunted to Sheffield

For over 70 years I always thought I was born in Sheffield, but my birth certificate says I was born at No18 Jodrell Street, New Mills.

My mother’s maiden name was Brockhurst until she married my dad Harry Parkin, who was a shunter on the railway.

This is appropriate as he shunted us from New Mills to Sheffield, where we finished up on Cuthbert Road, Hillsborough.

I remember when I was 12, I worked on new Mills railway station cleaning coaches, checking lamps, sweeping the office. The station manager was called Enoch and we had to walk on a narrow bridge to get to the station over a deep river.
