Showtime for rare car saved from flood

A RARE car that escaped the Sheffield floods was the centre of attention at an exhibition of vintage vehicles.

The 50hp Sheffield Simplex was rescued from the disastrous floods a month ago by staff at Kelham Island museum who managed to tow it to the second floor.

The rare motor found itself one of the top attractions when it went on show at Hope Valley Rotary Club's Vintage, Classic Car and Motorcycle Extravaganza.

Motoring enthusiasts among the visitors were keen to examine the Sheffield-made Simplex, one of only a few still in existence.

There was also the opportunity to see a forerunner of one of the best known cars of all time - James Bond's famous Aston Martin.

Just 21 of Aston Martin's Ulster model were made in the 1930s - and one of them belongs to Peak District enthusiast Alan Beardshow. Originally built for a man in Sheffield, Alan has owned it since 2004.

Earlier this year Alan's car turned heads at the world-famous Italian Mille MIglia event.

Alan was joined by son Chris as co-driver at the Bamford Recreation Ground for this year's show, which also featured a wide range of vehicles, including veteran, vintage and Edwardian cars, as well as post-1960 classics, motorcycles and scooters.

Show organiser Malcolm Dungworth said: "The show was just as popular as ever and attracted people from a very wide area.

"We are sponsored this year by Hatfields Jaguar Cars and Northside Mercedes and we are very grateful to them. Without their backing the show would not have been the successful charity fund-raising event we expect it to be."

Profits from the event will be used to support the work of the Yorkshire Air Ambulance and other good causes.
