Showcase is bringing jobs

Have your say

I’d like to thank all those who worked over the past year on Sheffield Showcase. Feedback over the window displays is overwhelmingly positive.

This Lib Dem project provides high quality window displays in over 130 vacant shop windows. Instead of boarded-up windows and graffiti stained buildings, shoppers are greeted with bright, vibrant and colourful displays as they pass down the street.

This has made shoppers feel more secure, supported local businesses and created jobs. Nine apprentices have been employed by The Source to work on the Sheffield Showcase. As well gaining valuable work experience, they’ve gained qualifications to help them find full time jobs. And the displays have been widely praised; in October, students from the Showcase won ‘Best Window Display’ award at the World Retail Congress in Berlin.

We’re keen to move to the next phase and are to dress vacant windows at the Co-op, Castlegate. It is hoped the Showcase will encourage investment in the area. Early signs are very positive. Without the interest created and maintained by the displays it is unlikely businesses would have invested in the area.

At a time when Sheffield’s future is dependent on private sector growth, it is vital the council supports businesses. The Liberal Democrats want Sheffield to become the most business-friendly city in the country so we can bring growth and jobs to the city. The Sheffield Showcase is just one initiative being taken by Lib Dem councillors to deliver exactly that.
