ARMED robbers who held up a South Yorkshire bookmakers are being hunted by police.

The trio struck at Betfred, Main Street, Swallownest, Rotherham.

Police said while they were brandishing the guns, the trio ordered the cashier to open up the safe.

One of the men stood at the door, thought to have been acting as the look-out, while the other two seized the cash.

While the door was open to allow the robbers to escape, a dog belonging to a customer in the betting shop ran out into the road outside and was struck by a car and died.

The robbers are all described as being about 6ft. They all wore balaclavas and boiler suits.

One may have been wearing small silver-rimmed glasses.

A South Yorkshire Police spokeswoman said: “Police are appealing for information following an alleged armed robbery in Swallownest.

“On Wednesday, February 20, at about 9.20pm, it is reported three men entered a Betfred bookmakers on Main Street, Swallownest, and it is believed the men demanded the cashier open the safe.

“It is reported they were armed with shotguns.

“During the incident, it is believed that one of the men acted as a look out, keeping the door to the bookmaker’s open.

“A dog belonging to one of the customers is reported to have run out of the door and subsequently been killed by a car.
