A young man was shot and another badly beaten in a spate of violence being investigated by Doncaster police today.

Three people are due in court today on charges of attempted murder after the alleged shooting incident on a travellers’ site in Thorne.

Meanwhile, other officers are seeking witnesses to an alleged attack which left another man with a serious brain injury while he was sleeping rough in Wheatley.

The shooting is believed to have involved a feud between two families on the Lands End caravan site at Thorne.

Police were called to the caravan site about 10.50pm on Sunday to reports of a firearms incident.

A police spokesman said yesterday: “It is believed a shotgun had been fired within the caravan site.

“A 22-year-old man was found with gun shot injuries and was taken to hospital.

“Two men, aged 45 and 17, and a 22-year-old woman, were arrested in connection with the incident and have today been charged with attempted murder.

“Officers believe this was a targeted attack.”

The 22-year-old man, who has not been named, was transferred in a critical condition from Doncaster to the Northern General Hospital, Sheffield, early on Monday with wounds to his torso but was yesterday said to be ‘stable’.

The trio are due to appear before Doncaster magistrates today - but a day of protest action by defence lawyers over changes to legal aid may mean their case will be delayed until tomorrow.

Two men have also been charged in connection with the alleged attack on a homeless 41-year-old man in the Kings Road area of Wheatley last Friday night about 10.40pm.

Police were called to reports a man had sustained head injuries outside the Clarks Corner Shop, close to the junction with Broxholme Lane.

He is currently in the Royal Hallamshire Hospital in Sheffield, where he is receiving treatment for a fractured skull and a bleed on the brain.

“It is believed he may have been sleeping rough before being assaulted,” said a police spokesman.

A 19-year-old man from Doncaster and a 21-year-old man from Wheatley have been arrested on suspicion of assault and released on police bail pending further inquiries.

Police want to speak to witnesses - especially a man seen walking his dog, or the driver of a silver or grey Vauxhall Zafira - in the area at the time.
