Fines of hundreds of pounds were handed out to shops selling alcohol to underage youths during a test purchasing operation carried out by police in parts of Sheffield.

The operation was carried out at 14 shops in the north east of the city.

Four premises located at Southey Avenue, Southey; Burncross Road, Chapeltown; Wincobank Avenue, Wincobank and Page Hall Road, Fir Vale, failed the test, which took place last Wednesday night.

All of the shops were issued with penalty notices of £90 each, while Sheffield’s licensing authority will also be informed.

Police regularly carry out test purchases involving young volunteers to catch out shops who breach the rules. The teenagers are supervised by officers.
