Meadowhall: Shoppers still love Meadowhall – but these four complaints keep coming up
Meadowhall remains one of the region’s most popular shopping centres – but a number of shoppers are leaving frustrated by a handful of recurring issues.
Sheffield’s Meadowhall remains one of the UK’s most popular shopping destinations, attracting millions of visitors each year and continuing to score strongly with visitors.
The vast mall holds a solid four-star rating on Google reviews, with thousands of five-star reviews praising its huge range of shops, ease of access and family-friendly facilities.
One visitor described it as having “all the shops you need under one roof”, while another highlighted its “excellent public transport links and free parking”.
Meadowhall’s strengths are well rehearsed: dozens of high street brands, cafés and restaurants, a cinema, children’s play areas, beauty salons and more than 12,000 free parking spaces.
Many reviewers also praise its accessibility, with wheelchair users highlighting lifts throughout the centre, wide walkways and clean facilities.
“I love it, it has all the shops you need! Parking is great as there are a lot of parking spaces,” said one reviewer.

Others highlighted its transport links, cleanliness and family-friendly features.
They wrote: “Great shopping center and easy to reach via public transport, has a train station. Plenty of parking. It's huge, very easy to get lost but that's all part of it.”
Accessibility is also frequently praised.
One Christmas visitor said: “Came for Christmas shopping. Place was easy accessible for my wheelchair. Beautiful decorations, there is an abundance of different things to shop for and variety of food to eat.”
Parents also spoke positively about facilities for children.
But despite the praise, a number of recurring complaints continue to appear among negative reviews.
These tend to fall into four main areas.
1. Parking rules and fines
Parking policies – particularly around parent-and-child bays – are the most common source of frustration.
One shopper said: “We parked in the children's section with our three grandchildren and were fined £60 because we didn't register our car.”
Another wrote: “After coming here for years but living out of the area, we decided to pay a visit for shopping and food at the Thai place which was lovely. However, come out to a parking fine because I'd not registered for a child space!”
Some parents said they were unaware of age restrictions or registration requirements.
One review read: “parked in a parent and child bay at Meadowhall with my 10-year-old child completely reasonable, right? Apparently not. I received a £100 parking fine because I ‘didn’t register,’ which I was never made aware of.”
Another added: “Who goes shopping with small children at a shopping centre or supermarket and stops read the small print?”
Even those who are giving the megamall a five-star review mention the difficulty with parking: “If you go with kids make sure you ask for your parking permit at the information desk inside Meadowhall if you don't get this and park your car in those spaces you'll probably get a fine! So make sure you get the permit.”
2. Disabled access and consideration
While many praise Meadowhall’s accessibility, some visitors with disabilities say their overall experience fell short.
Complaints include disabled bays being fully occupied, long distances from coach drop-off points and a lack of flexibility in parking enforcement.
One reviewer said a coach party was dropped “a good 20-minute walk away”, calling it a “complete lack of consideration”.
Another reviewer said: “The disabled car parking slots all taken so I parked in parent parking I had my 12-year-old disabled daughter with me.
“I displayed my disabled blue badge in the screen. They gave me a yellow ticket £60.”
3. Crowds
For some shoppers, Meadowhall’s sheer popularity is part of the problem.
One reviewer said: “Far too busy, take your own snacks. Not enough chairs and no bins. The toilet facilities were amazing though!”
Crowds were a recurring theme, with one shopper warning: “Could be great when not ridiculously busy, if you don't like crowds please don't visit on a Saturday afternoon, big mistake!”
4. Security
Some shoppers were also unhappy with security enforcement.
One said: “Got accosted by security to have the outright audacity to take a photo indoors.”
Another said: “So-called security staff are more like night club bouncers.”
Despite the criticisms, even some negative reviewers acknowledged positives.
One simply said: “Hate the place lol. Not for me. But the food establishments are not too bad.”
