Shop will double in size with council approval for extra new floor to be installed

A new internal floor which will virtually double the size of a Parkgate shopping unit in Rotherham is such a large development it had to go before councillors for approval.

They unanimously approved the change after hearing how the new mezzanine floor would provide another 3,680 square metres of floor space, in addition to the 3,774 which already exist at the unit, which is occupied by the Matalan store.

Because of the size of the development, the applicants had to check whether there was an alternative site which could provide the same space that they require – which would have meant more than 7,000 square metres to cover both the existing store and the extension they want, but none was found to be available.

A further report had to be compiled to examine the potential impact of the development, with both then scrutinised by council officials, who accepted there was no viable alternative site and there would be no adverse impact from the change.

Plans for the new floor include the installation of a lift, to ensure access for disabled customers, with staircases for general access.

The size of the extended floorspace means the change is classed as a major development, meaning it had to go before councillors on the planning board for consideration.
